Seoul-based Yoon & Yang LLC has hired four senior lawyers with extensive experience in international work, including Hee Woong Yoon, the former managing partner at Yulchon from 2019 to February 2025, who is set to assume the role of senior partner.     The other senior lawyers joining Yoon & Yang are Jay Shim, Sung Hyun Ryu and Hoanku Lee, who all formerly worked at Lee & Ko’s international tax team.     “Key global taxation issues are emerging, and multinational companies urgently require specialised advisory services to proactively mitigate tax risks and restructure their global investment frameworks,” Myung Soo Lee, senior managing partner at Yoon & Yang, told Asia Business Law Journal.    Shim most recently was the co-head of the tax practice at Lee & Ko, a position he held for more than a decade. Ryu, who worked with Shim and Hoanku Lee at Lee & Ko, served as a deputy director for the National Tax Service, the country’s tax agency, before joining Lee & Ko in 2012. John Polson, chairman and managing partner of Fisher Phillips, said it was the only US-based firm focused on labour and employment law to have a presence in Japan. “We looked at a number of key Asia markets but decided, ultimately, that Tokyo is the best fit for our firm’s global strategy. Japan continues to solidify its position as a leading foreign investor in the US – a trend that is expected to continue,” he said. Registered as Fisher & Phillips Foreign Law Office, the Tokyo office currently has a team of seven lawyers headed by partner Nan Sato. Sato, who will be working with five of counsels – four of whom are admitted in Japan – will split her time between her US-based practice and developing the firm’s Asia presence. She will also be assisted by senior business consultant Shikun Gao, founder of Shimin Foreign Law Office in Tokyo. David Kearney, chief executive partner and co-founder of Wotton Kearney, said that, although other Asian jurisdictions would always be under consideration, Thailand was seen as the most immediate opportunity where his firm’s clients were growing not only their reinsurance participation but also their on the ground presence. The Australian firm will initially have two partners and four additional lawyers in Thailand, plus support staff. They will complement and work in conjunction with its two partners and six associate lawyers in Singapore, as well as the wider Wotton Kearney team.
